If you’re a PlayStation fan looking for a VR headset that’s solid on graphics, the PS VR2 is a great pick—especially with the price now down to $349 (from $599.99). It’s not the lightest headset out there, but it’s packed with great features, including an OLED display that delivers crisp 2K resolution per eye at up to 120Hz. This makes for a super immersive visual experience, complete with a 110-degree field of view and eye-tracking (something you’d usually only see on more expensive headsets like the Meta Quest Pro). That said, it does come with a few trade-offs, like the somewhat minimal padding around the face mask, which could be a discomfort for longer gaming sessions. But, the visor is adjustable, so you can slide it forward or backward for a better fit.
Setting up the PlayStation VR2 is super simple—just plug the USB-C cable into your PS5, turn on the headset, and the console will automatically detect it. Then, it walks you through adjusting the fit, pairing the controllers, and setting up your play area. Once you’re all set, you can use the PS VR2 to play any game on a big virtual screen. You can also use the VR2 to play non-VR games on a simulated virtual screen, which is a nice bonus (though, it won’t have the 3D or motion-tracking effects that VR games do). And, just a heads up: The VR2 isn’t compatible with older PS VR games, so if you were hoping to revisit that library, it’s not an option. On the bright side, the PS VR2 comes bundled with Sony’s VR game, Horizon: Call of the Mountain, a stunning first-person adventure set in the Horizon universe, so there’s plenty to dive into.
The controllers are reportedly comfortable, with a grip that feels natural in your hands. However, you’ll only get about three to four hours of use per controller before needing to recharge them, according to this PCMag review—and you can’t charge both controllers at once out of the box, since there’s only one USB-C cable included. If you want to charge them together, you’ll need to buy a charging dock for an extra $50, which adds to your overall cost.
