At WWDC 2024, Apple detailed all the new features coming to the visionOS 2 update for their Vision Pro headset later this year, including those related to productivity, the ability to create spatial photos, and an improvement to the Travel Mode.
Productivity in visionOS 2
One of the more significant parts of the update are the new productivity features, such as the new Mac Virtual Display options and gestures. In visionOS 2, you’ll be able to make dual 4K virtual displays to make it like you have an ultrawide display. (At the moment, the Vision Pro can make a single 5K Mac Virtual Display.) Mouse support is also coming, so you’ll be able to connect a mouse to your Vision Pro in addition to a physical keyboard like Apple’s Magic Keyboard.
New hand gestures for the Control Center, current time, battery level, and volume adjustments are also included in the new update.
New Photos app features
Also in the new update, you’ll soon be able to create spatial photos within the Photos app. visionOS 2 will use advanced machine learning to turn a 2D image into a spatial photo. And then you’ll be able to use SharePlay in the Photos app and view your spatial photos and videos with your friends and their Spatial Personas.
Train support in Travel Mode
When the Vision Pro launched, it came with a Travel mode that lets you use the headset on airplanes. But now with the visionOS 2 update, you can also use your headset on trains—that means you can access your favorite apps on Vision Pro while riding the train.
And if you want to share your Vision Pro with a friend, you can let them use it as a Guest User and save their eye and hand data for 30 days.
Wider availability for Vision Pro
In addition to all these new features in visionOS 2, the Apple Vision Pro will be launching in more countries. The headset is launching in Canada, Australia, France, Germany, and the UK on July 12 with pre-orders starting at 5 a.m. PT on June 28. It’ll also be launching in mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore on June 28 with pre-orders starting at 6 p.m. PT on June 13.
visionOS 2 Update
The visionOS 2 update will be launching as a free update for all Apple Vision Pro users this fall. The headset comes pre-installed with visionOS 1.2.
This is a developing story. Apple’s WWDC conference set to last through June 14.
