Donating blood is an essential way to support communities recovering from a disaster as well as year-round for people with blood disorders, injuries, and chronic illnesses. And for a little extra encourages to make the appointment, if you donate blood via the Red Cross now through Oct. 31, you’ll get a $10 Amazon gift card in exchange. Here’s how to make a donation.
How to schedule a blood donation
To start the process, go to redcrossblood.org and type in your zip code to find a donation site in your area and view available appointments. The Red Cross takes whole blood donations (the most common type) and “power red” donations, which siphon off red cells while returning platelets and plasma to the donor. The latter has additional eligibility requirements, including having type O, A negative, or B negative blood. Donations take an hour to 90 minutes (or longer) depending on the type. You can also elect to donate platelets or plasma if you meet the requirements.
Once you select a place and time, you’ll need to create an account (or log in if you have one already) using information like your name, date of birth, email address, and zip code. You’ll be able to manage your appointments and view you donation history in from your account page.
Alternatively, you can call 1-800-733-2767 to set up an appointment.
How to prepare for your blood donation
The Red Cross recommends being rested, hydrated, and well-fueled the day before your donation and drinking 16 ounces of water before your appointment. You’ll need your photo ID and a list of current medications when you check in, and you should wear loose clothing that allows easy access to your arm above your elbow. There are also aftercare recommendations, including avoiding strenuous activity.
While the Red Cross is a major provider of blood and donation drives, you may find other donation sites via the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB).
